PAMA, a leader in large machine tools, aiming for 200 million in revenue by 2030. At the core of its strategy: continuous innovation, local training, and global presence.

INNOVATION as the key to growth: this is the strategy of PAMA, one of the global leaders in the production of large machine tools. The company, based in Trentino and headquartered in Rovereto, is aiming for €200 million in revenue by 2030, placing innovation at the core of its vision.

“Process innovation, product innovation and technological innovation,” explains Michele Dal Rì, Director of Product Development at PAMA. “These three levels,” he continues, “allow us to maintain profitability in the short, medium, and long term, while also structuring a consistent growth path in terms of both volume and revenue.”

PAMA employs over 350 people at its Rovereto facility, where design, engineering, assembly and production of machines for a wide range of industrial sectors take place: aerospace, energy, transportation, oil & gas, machinery manufacturing, die & mold, general machining and earth moving. The company’s research and development department is also located in Rovereto. The technical department includes 70 employees – about one fifth of the total workforce – working in highly qualified teams.

PAMA S.p.A. currently generates an annual revenue of around €145 million. Each machine is tailored to the customer’s needs, with an extremely high level of customization. “We never build the same machine twice,” Dal Rì points out. “That’s our goal: to provide tailor-made solutions for the major international players who come to us.”

Thanks to its reliability and precision, PAMA often stays one step ahead of the competition. Demand comes from all over the world. “We generate 80% of our revenue abroad.”

PAMA’s positioning in the international market is also the result of strong alliances with major global partners. This context explains the recent acquisition of PAMA by Nidec Corporation — a Japanese giant with 110,000 employees and €13 billion in annual revenue. In 2022, Nidec set its sights on the Trentino-based company, and the resulting acquisition proved beneficial for both parties.

“We have remained independent within the Group,” emphasizes Michele Dal Rì, “while working in synergy with the other facilities.”

As part of the larger Group, PAMA also operates through its own additional sites: a production facility in Brescia, Italy, and another in Shanghai, China. The company maintains a widespread presence through several sales and service branches, including locations in the United States, Germany, France, India, and Brazil.

Despite strong internationalization, Pama maintains a deep connection to its local territory. Employees are trained by selecting the most promising young talents through collaboration programs with universities in the Trentino region and thanks to the work carried out by the Pama Academy: an internal academy that works closely with the technical institutes of the province.
“We try to train qualified professionals locally who then stay within the company,” they explain.

Innovation guides the entire business model. It is a central focus for Pama, around which everything revolves.
“Regarding process innovation,” explains Michele Dal Rì, “we have introduced a working method into the production cycle that allows us to continuously plan factory operations and manage peaks in demand, even though we work on a made-to-order basis. As for product innovation, we are introducing modular production capabilities, enabling us to offer a wide variety of customization while keeping the number of components low.

We want to expand our product range while reducing the complexity of the production cycle. In other words, more standardized manufacturing processes for increasingly customized products.

Finally, regarding technological innovation, we are mainly focusing on digitalization. From a technological standpoint, mechanical engineering has reached levels that are unlikely to see major upheavals. Therefore, the area where future competitiveness will be decided is linked to our ability to use the data collected from the operation of our machines. This data can be leveraged both to improve machine productivity at the customer’s site and to generate innovative ideas for the development of new products.

In this perspective, at the beginning of 2025, Pama launched the Operator project, taking advantage of the new LP6/23 incentives for research and development activities:

“The Operator project aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for managing digital services and developing innovative functionalities. The Trentino research system will play a fundamental role in carrying out these activities”.
